Specialist Rifle Services was set by Steve Bowers to build custom, high precision long range F–Class, varmint and stalking rifles.
Unable to find anyone with the capacity to realise his ideas to the quality he required and demanded, Steve started his own research into and development of precision rifles. As a fully qualified and experienced tool maker running a successful precision engineering workshop for 24 years, he was able to employ modern engineering techniques to make rifles that gave him the level of accuracy and quality he desired. Soon the word spread, and orders were placed from professional stalkers and sportsmen requiring accurate, custom built rifles for competitions, vermin control and deer management.
Steve was brought up in a rural community where shooting, fishing and hunting were not only pursued, but actively encouraged. After getting his first .22 Rimfire at the age of six, he soon developed a passion for accurate rifle shooting, honing his skills by entering competitions with the Air Cadets using Lee–Endfield 303’s and 7.62 NATO service rifles over 100–600 yards. Most boys might have got a paper round; not Steve. He was assisting the local pest control officer, earning pocket money and gaining vital experience.
On leaving school Steve was awarded a 5 year traditional tool making apprenticeship with a local aircraft engineering company, and of 700 apprentices was 1 of only 10 offered a permanent post–apprenticeship position. Eager to develop his skills further, he soon moved to a family–run engineering company producing plastic injection mould tools. It was here Steve first started Bowers Engineering, taking on short–order contracts for the company during the evenings and weekends, until the business grew sufficiently for him to break ties with the company and set up on his own.
Meanwhile, Steve’s passion for shooting continued to grow. In the early 1990’s he started a series of courses in deer and woodland management. When he graduated Steve was offered the management of a number of large estates in the South West of England, which he continues to do, along with lecturing at the Agricultural College and British Deer Society, and acting as a freelance consultant for The Woodland Trust, advising on deer management in native woodland.
Steve takes part in F–Class competitions throughout the UK, and regularly writes for the Shooting Times on rifle problems and rifle testing.
